Who are We?
The Coalition for Queer Ghanaian Liberation is a group of queer Ghanaians and allies based in Canada. The group was formed in 2021 as a response to the presentation of the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill to the Ghanaian Parliament.
What are our Demands?
President Nana Akufo-Addo could possibly sign and assent this proposed bill into law by March 7, 2024.
We are calling on H.E. Anselm Ransford Sowah, the Ghanaian High Commissioner to Canada to present our letter of petition to the President and advocate against the passing of this bill, immediately.
What is Happening in Ghana?
On February 28 2024, Ghana’s parliament voted in favour of a controversial anti-LGBTQ bill following months of debate that could make it illegal to identify as an LGBTQIA+ person or ally.
The proposed HUMAN SEXUAL RIGHTS AND FAMILY VALUES ACT, 2024 seeks “to provide proper human sexual rights and Ghanaian family values.”
The bill was proposed and funded by the ultra conservative National Coalition for Proper Human Sexual Rights and Family Values, a group in Ghana that advocates for conversion therapy and fear mongering through misinformation of LGBTQ health. This coalition has been linked to the World Congress of Families, which is a designated hate group out of the United States.
The bill is one of the harshest of its kind in Africa and, if signed into law, it could see people who identify as LGBTQIA+ sentenced to up to three years in prison. Those found guilty of the “promotion, sponsorship or support of LGBTQ+ activities'' could also face a prison sentence of up to five years in prison.
